Among his notable investments was co-financing the animated film The Polar Express (2004), featuring the voice of Tom Hanks. Bing reportedly invested $85 million into the project, which became a global success, earning $285 million at the box office.
He also financed Robert Zemeckis’ Beowulf and produced Martin Scorsese’s Shine a Light, a Rolling Stones concert film. As a screenwriter, Bing co-wrote the 1985 film Missing in Action II: The Beginning and contributed to the story and screenplay for the 2003 comedy Kangaroo Jack.
Beyond filmmaking, Bing demonstrated a passion for music, financing and producing the independently released album Last Man Standing by Jerry Lee Lewis. His work extended beyond entertainment into politics, where he became a significant donor to the Democratic Party. Starting in 1993 with a $500 contribution to Senator Frank Lautenberg’s re-election campaign, Bing ultimately donated over $10.7 million at the federal level.
During the 2006 election cycle, he contributed at least $49.5 million to support Proposition 87, a California initiative aimed at funding alternative energy development through oil production taxes. Bing also supported various Democratic campaigns nationwide, helping the party regain control of Congress.
In addition to his political and philanthropic contributions, Bing played a role in significant humanitarian efforts.
