In January 1986, he scored four centuries a week during the Northern Tasmania junior cricket competition, earning him a sponsorship deal with bat manufacturer Kookaburra. Less than a month later, he scored a century in the Under-16s competition.

He had to wait until 1995 to make his ODI debut for Australia during a quadrangular tournament in New Zealand. Shortly after, he made his Test debut in the 1995 home series against Sri Lanka, scoring 96 runs.
