Biography

Emeritus Professor Taole Mokoena is a 71-year-old South African academic and medical scholar. He is the current SA health ombud, appointed on June 1.

The ombud was an independent body established according to the National Health Amendment Act of 2013.

As the new ombud, Prof Taole Mokoena will work in the Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC). He has shown the quality of South Africa’s academic prowess to the world.

Education

Taole Mokoena is a medical graduate of the University of Natal. He also holds a DPhil graduate from the University of Oxford. He is also a fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. 

Career

Prof Taole recently retired as a professor. He held many notable positions in many departments in University hospitals. He was an academic head of the Department of Surgery and chief surgeon of the Department of general surgery at the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital. 

After retirement, he continues to work part-time as a teacher, trainer, and supervisor to undergraduate and post-graduate medical students and researchers.

His clinical and research interests revolve around immunology, oncology, and endocrinology. He was part of the renal transplant unit at renowned universities.

Taole has served countless times on several national and professional bodies. 

Some of the bodies he served in include the SA Medical Association, the Colleges of Medicine of SA, and the Health Professions Council of SA. He chaired a panel investigating surgical deaths at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in 1996/7.

The Prof also chaired a panel inquiring into discrimination within the hospital’s cardiology department.

Appointment

Emeritus Professor Taole Resetselemang Mokoena succeeded Professor Makgoba as the new health ombud.

Taole has experience in investigating and inquiring into wrongdoing and injustices in the healthcare sector. 

The Ministry and Department hope his predecessor will not leave the healthcare system totally. The institution will seek his advice and counsel.
