Lize Beekman (born in 1974) is a multiple-award-winning African singer and songwriter. She has written over sixty songs, and most are tracks in her albums.

The renowned singer has known songs and love. She recorded her debut CD, Eyes of a Child, in 1997. It consists of music composed in Afrikaans and English.

Early Life

Lize Beekman was born in 1974. At three years, she announced that a day would come when she would write her songs. At twelve, she recorded her first song, Like an Eagle. Clive Bruce recorded the song as the title track of his then-new album.

While in high school, she received the first prize in two national songwriting competitions for two consecutive years.

Beekman recorded her first CD, Eyes of a Child, in 1997. It consists of lyrics and music composed in English and Afrikaans. The song was a nominee for a South African Music Awards (SAMA) in the category Best Adult Contemporary Album – English.

The national Red Nose Day Campaign held by MNET used her track Lord, it’s Raining, her song. Alongside Amanda Strydom, she won a SAMA award in the category Best Musical Soundtrack for the soundtrack of ‘n Vuur gevang in Glas.

In 2000 she released her second album with new material in both languages. It included the theme song of the television series Soutmansland.

Beekman released another CD, Iemand Het Gesê, in 2003. The album housed twelve tracks – Beekman originals and was 100% Afrikaans. In 2004, she made it to the finals of the SAMA’s in the Category Best Adult Contemporary Album – Afrikaans.

Lize and Gloria Bosman were nominees for a KANNA Award at the KKNK2004 in the Category for Best Musical Performance. In late 2004, she launched her Fundraising Project ALL THE SAME with REVLON SA as a corporate partner.

The title track performed well and made it to the top 20 Charts on various radio stations. It was a finalist for a SAMA Award in 2006 in the category of Best Adult Contemporary Album – Afrikaans.

Lize dropped another CD with only lullabies – Lize Beekman Lullabies in September 2007. She recorded a new solo album, Sit ‘n Bietjie Langs My, and released it in May 2008.

The album was a nominee for a SAMA Award in the category Best Adult Contemporary Album: Afrikaans, together with Amanda Strydom, Valiant Swart, Chris Chameleon, and Coenie de Villiers in 2009.

Lize received a Special Recognition award from ATKV of Pretoria-East for contributing to Afrikaans Music in 2008. Still, in 2008, she performance for the first time at Aardvark in London, United Kingdom.

In 2002, her song, ’n Sonneblom uit Bethlehem, was a nominee for a Song of the Year during the GMT Awards. Her songs have aired in many languages – Afrikaans, English, Xhosa, and French. She has performed in South Africa and abroad in the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, and London.

Philanthropy

Lize donates all artists’ profits to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. The CD was a nominee for the 2008 South African Music Awards. She has donated over R200 000 to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. 

In April 2009, she received the honor of becoming a Guardian of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

Personal Life

Lize lives in Melkbosstrand in Cape Town, South Africa.
