The George region has become popular for its stunning coastline, featuring a diverse range of beaches that cater to every preference.

From the thrill of surfing at iconic Victoria Bay to family-friendly fun at Herold’s Bay, and tranquil escapes at secluded spots like Kaaimans, George has a beach for everyone.

Victoria Bay is a surfer’s paradise, famous for its right-hand point break and the picturesque “Moon Gate.”

Victoria Bay is situated approximately 3km from George and 6km from Wilderness traveling from George to Knysna on the N2. This iconic beach is perfect for those looking to catch some waves, soak up the sun, or snap a few selfies.

Herold’s Bay, on the other hand, is a family favorite, offering warm tidal pools, surf lessons, and local snack vendors.

A diverse range of beaches

For those seeking a more secluded experience, Kaaimans is a hidden gem featuring a tidal estuary perfect for paddling and fishing (with a permit). Access requires a short hike, so be sure to bring all necessities.

Leentjiesklip is great for sunbathing, fishing (with a permit), and whale watching, with the added bonus of beach braais and paragliders launching from Dolphin’s Point.

Dog lovers and those seeking solitude will adore Kleinkrantz, with its expansive sand dunes leading to endless stretches of beach perfect for long walks.

Wilderness Main Beach is a family-friendly spot with calm river mouth waters for kids, easy access near Salina’s Beach Restaurant, and a safe environment for relaxation.

Last but not least, Gwaing River Mouth is a local gem with a serene river mouth suitable for fishing (with a permit) and family outings. It offers excellent picnic spots and scenic views, making it a must-visit destination.

Beach safety a priority

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, lifeguards are on duty at Victoria Bay, Herold’s Bay, Wilderness Main Beach, Gwaing River Mouth, and Leentjiesklip from 9 am–5 pm until December 13, with extended hours from 7 am–7 pm until January 31.

Wilderness Main Beach, Herold’s Bay, and Victoria Bay have achieved full Blue Flag status, according to the George Municipality.

“Leentjiesklip continues as a Pilot Blue Flag Beach, and Gwaing has been recognised with the prestigious Green Coast Award.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting, George’s spectacular beaches have something for everyone.”

“So why not come and explore our stunning coastline? With its diverse range of beaches, rich natural beauty, and commitment to safety and sustainability, George is the perfect destination for your next beach vacation,” the municipality said.
