My name is Bello Muhammad Bello, also known as General BMB in the Hausa cinema industry. I’m a film producer, director, actor, editor, and scriptwriter.
I was born, nurtured, and groomed by Islamic principles in Jos Plateau State.
I attended Islamiyya Primary School before continuing to Government Secondary School Riyom for my secondary studies.
After secondary school, I traveled from Nigeria to Germany, and then to Belgium in an attempt to make a life.
So, when the issue of the Hausa movie business reached us in Europe, I felt compelled to return and explore where I might fit in and contribute to the industry’s and the Hausa language’s growth.
However, when I returned, I was dissatisfied with the content generated by the industry.
As a result, I attended the University of Jos and earned a diploma in Mass Communication.
I returned for another diploma in marketing, and then in 2005, I chose to pursue a degree in economics.
I recently graduated from the University of Jos with an Economics degree.
Similarly, while studying, I attended various film production classes in Berlin, Germany, as well as a short session in London.
Following that, I immersed myself in the film industry, armed with the knowledge and experience I gained from the short courses I took, to bring about the necessary reforms.
Have you stopped acting?
I haven’t been visible in a while, but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up acting; I’ve been working on a variety of projects.
As we speak, I have completed production on one of my film series, which will serve as the foundation for my return to the cinema.
Furthermore, I am working on a roughly seven-film series, which will be my return gift to my followers.
I aim to make a massive comeback to the screen with issue-oriented films that will pave the way for a new dimension in the Hausa filmmaking industry.
I wrote and produced these shorts, which will be released on my YouTube channel.
You could have joined Nollywood. Why Kannywood?
I am from the North, and I am convinced that the northern film industry needs my input more than Nollywood.
If I focus more on Nollywood, I am not helping Kannywood.
It was considered that Nollywood had advanced in terms of sophistication and glamour, whereas we were viewed as falling behind, despite being older than them.
I aim to create a Hausa film industry that can compete with any other in the world, and Kannywood is where I call home. I’ll stay in it and save it with my people.
It’s not that I condemn Nollywood; rather, I’m arguing that Kannywood needs me today more than ever.
Why did you choose to remain silent while Kannywood was involved in a series of difficulties recently?
I purposefully avoided getting involved because those crises were issue-based.
What I mean is that the crises were primarily personal and had little bearing on the industry’s progress.
What role did you perform when you first joined the industry?
I began as a filmmaker with the film Rai, followed by ‘Uwar Miji’, ‘Saki Uku’, and many others.
What would you consider your happiest experience as an actor?
My happiest experience as an actor came when I was invited to travel to America with other industry professionals.
I had no idea that my contributions to the sector had been noticed and appreciated by so many individuals, both inside and outside of the Hausa-speaking communities.
We went and came back more informed and educated than when we left; it was an unforgettable experience for me.
Have you had any regrets as an actor?
To be honest, I did. I regretted getting involved in the quarrel between actors Ali Nuhu and Adam Zango.
I made a terrible error by choosing a standard from a one-sided narration and without listening to the other side.
And when it became so obvious, I realized I was foolish to take the position I did on the topic.
The conclusion was so horrible that I regretted it, even though the injured party had forgiven me.
Did you ask him for forgiveness?
Of course, I did. Ali Nuhu has been a very dear buddy of mine, and he has since forgiven me for the error, and we have proceeded from where we left off.
We’ve been best buddies ever since that occurred. I am the type of person who quickly apologizes when I realize I am wrong, regardless of who I hurt. When I upset someone, it’s easy for me to apologize.
Is BMB married?
Yes, I am married to Zainab Yunusa, an actress who appeared in one of my films, ‘Uwar Miji’. We have been married for five years and are blessed with twins.
