Early Life and Education
Doechii was born on August 14, 1998, in Tampa, Florida, to parents whose names have not been publicly disclosed. She has two younger twin sisters. Doechii graduated in 2016 from Howard W. Blake High School in Tampa, where she specialised in vocal technology and classical choral singing. She is of African American descent and practises Christianity.
Career
Doechii began writing poetry and rapping during high school. In 2016, she released her first song, Girls, on SoundCloud under the name Iamdoechii. Her debut project, Coven Music Session, Vol. 1, followed in 2019.
In 2020, she self-funded her debut EP, Oh the Places You’ll Go. Critics praised her animated rap delivery and unique songwriting style, comparing her to artists like Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, and Azealia Banks. She has described her genre as alternative hip-hop, drawing inspiration from Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, and SZA.
2021 marked her breakout year with the viral success of her single Yucky Blucky Fruitcake on TikTok. That same year, she released her second EP, Bra-Less, featured on Isaiah Rashad’s album, and toured as an opening act for SZA.
