David Richard Solberg is an American-British actor and singer born on August 28, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. His parents, June Solberg and Dr. Richard W. Solberg, raised him.
His mother, June Joanne (Nelson), was a teacher, and his father was a Lutheran minister, professor of History and Political Science, and director of Higher Education for the Lutheran Church in America (now part of the ELCA).
Solberg has a brother named Rev. Solberg. The family lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Solberg attended Augustana College for two years. The family later moved to Mexico City, where Solberg studied for one year at the University of the Americas.
Upon returning from Mexico, Solberg was hired to sing in a club at the University of Minnesota called The 10 O’Clock Scholar. Solberg’s ethnicity is white, and he practises Christianity as his religion.
Career
David Soul began acting in the mid-1960s as a founding member of the Firehouse Theater in Minneapolis. He then travelled to New York City in 1965, where he appeared in productions of Bertolt Brecht’s “Baal” and John Arden’s “Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance.”
This early work on the stage marked the beginning of Soul‘s journey into the entertainment industry. Soul first gained national attention in the United States by appearing on “The Merv Griffin Show” in 1966 and 1967.
During these appearances, he would sing while wearing a mask, adopting the moniker “the Covered Man.” This unique performance style and his desire to be known for his music set the stage for his future endeavours.
In 1967, Soul made his television debut in “Flipper.” Shortly after, he signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and began to secure guest roles on various television shows, including an appearance on the second season of “Star Trek.”
His breakthrough role came when he landed the part of Joshua Bolt on the ABC television series “Here Come the Brides,” which aired from 1968 to 1970.
However, the role that genuinely cemented Soul‘s fame was his portrayal of Detective Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson on the popular television series “Starsky & Hutch.”
He played this character from 1975 until 1979 and even directed three episodes of the show. During his career, Soul also made guest appearances on other renowned television series, such as “I Dream of Jeannie,” “McMillan & Wife,” and “All in the Family.”

David Soul married five times throughout his life. His first marriage was to Miriam Russeth in 1964, followed by a marriage to actress Karen Carlson in 1968.
1980, he married Patti Carnel Sherman and then Julia Nickson in 1987. Soul‘s final marriage was to Helen Snell in 2010, after the two began a relationship in 2002 during the production of the play Deathtrap.
Over his lifetime, David Soul had six children – five sons and one daughter. They are China Soul, Christopher Soul, Brendan Soul, Tyler Soul, Jon Soul, and Jon-Kristjian Soul. Tragically, David Soul passed away on January 4, 2024, at the age of 80.
