In an effort to combat recurring water supply disruptions plaguing Hout Bay, multi-disciplinary water and sanitation teams have embarked on a mission to minimise water service interruptions.

Critical pipe replacements are underway and emergency solutions are being implemented. The City is striving to alleviate the inconvenience faced by residents and businesses in Hout Bay.

Hout Bay’s high terrain strains water infrastructure

According to city officials, the high-altitude terrain of Hout Bay necessitates a high-pressure water distribution system, contributing to the frequent bursts in aging water supply infrastructure.

“The aging system and interconnected network of water pipes remain under pressure and are prone to bursts,” the City stated.

Furthermore, in a bid for a long-term solution, the City has allocated R836.6 million for pipe replacement this fiscal year. With significant progress already made in various parts of Hout Bay. However, until the comprehensive replacement program is completed, maintenance teams are tackling emergency repairs on a daily basis.

Moreover, recent repairs along Andrews Road and ongoing servicing of a pressure release valve in Llandudno are indicative of the City’s commitment to resolving the issue swiftly. However, despite these efforts, reports of further disruptions persist. Prompting continuous monitoring and response from dedicated teams.

Here is what residents need to know about water disruptions

Hout Bay residents are reminded that water and sanitation repair sites are off-limits to the public for safety reasons.

Additionally, they are cautioned about potential discoloration or cloudiness in water following restoration, attributed to trapped air in the pipes.

Planning for water supply disruptions

Store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance to use during the water outages. Keep taps closed to prevent any water loss or damage when the water supply is restored.

As the City races against bursting pipes to ensure uninterrupted water supply, residents are urged to remain patient and cooperative during this critical phase of maintenance and upgrade.
