Telkom South Africa offers a few ways to make your calls appear as “Private Number” or “No Caller ID” to the person you’re dialling.
Here’s how to do it, along with important details to keep in mind:
Method 1: Using a Prefix Code
This is the simplest and most commonly used method for private calls:
- Dial the Prefix: Before entering the phone number you want to call, dial the prefix code *31#.
- Enter the Number: Immediately after the prefix code, enter the full phone number, including the area code if applicable.
- Call as Usual: Press the call button on your phone to initiate the call.
Method 2: Per-Call Blocking with Vertical Service Codes
If you only need to make private calls occasionally, Telkom’s vertical service codes are a good option:
- Dial the Code: Before the phone number, dial #31#.
- Enter the Number: Immediately after the code, enter the full phone number you wish to call.
- Call: Press the call button to make the call.
Important Considerations:
- Caller ID Blocking Features: Some modern phones have built-in features for blocking your caller ID on an ongoing basis. Check your phone’s settings menu to see if this option is available.
- Emergency Services: Keep in mind that even when using private number methods, your number will still be visible to emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) if you call them. This is for safety purposes.
- Third-Party Apps: While there are apps claiming to offer private calling, use them with caution. Ensure they are from reputable sources and that they do not compromise your privacy or security.
- Cost: Telkom may charge a nominal fee for each private call you make using a prefix or vertical service code. It’s advisable to check their latest tariff guide for specific charges.
